Counting Points 101

A lot of you have been asking me about the Points program I keep referring to. It is designed by Weight Watchers and is (in my opinion) an easy way to track your daily food/calorie consumption.

Here is how you know how many Points to allow yourself each day. It is determined by your current weight (so it lowers as your body weight lowers). To lose weight a person must stay within their given points range, although 35 additional points are allowed to be used for the entire week (daily allowance times 7 plus 35).

Daily points ranges are as follows:

150 pounds: 18 to 23 points
150 to 174lbs: 20 to 25 points
175 to 199lbs: 22 to 27 points
200 to 224lbs: 24 to 29 points
225 to 249lbs: 26 to 31 points
250 to 274lbs: 28 to 33 points
275 to 299lbs: 29 to 34 points
300 to 324lbs: 30 to 35 points
325 to 349lbs: 31 to 36 points
Over 350lbs: 32 to 37 points

The Weight Watchers Points system means every 50 calories is a single point, 12 fat grams is a single point, and for each fiber gram you take away 1/5th of a point, up to a maximum of 4 fiber grams. The final points value will be the total points rounded to the nearest whole number.

points(calories,fat,fiber)=round( (calories/50) + (fat/12) - (min(fiber,4)/5) )

Now you see why I love the automatic calculator - I hate doing the math!

I am excited to try this recipe I found on the Fiber One Cereal box....
Only 1 Point per cookie!!

Fiber One Crunchy Fudge Cookies

1 box Betty Crocker brownie mix (1 pound 3.5 oz)
2 cups Fiber One cereal
2 tablespoons miniature semisweet chocolate chips
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1/3 cup water
1 large egg
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line cookie sheets with parchment or spray with cooking spray.
Mix ingredients together. Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto cookie sheets. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Transfer to cooling rack and let cool completely for 30 minutes.
Don’t try these before they cool! The cereal needs time to regain its crunchiness.

enjoy losing weight while still eating cookies!

The whole math thing would deture me. Heck, I don't even like figuring out a tip on the bill. :o) That recipe looks good! Any way to get a little sweet treat with less guilt is good in my book.
